trioVD – 24th May

by Jan on February 15, 2012

Chris Bussey – Drums
Christophe de Bezenac – Alto Sax/ Electronics
Chris Sharkey – Electric Guitar

“…earth-shattering, taking a sledgehammer to preconceived limitations of jazz…” – TIME OUT
The terrific Leeds-based trioVD followed up with an equally ferocious display, this time a fast, tight and awesomely expert conjunction of spiky high-energy compositions, uninhibited sax and guitar improvisation and machine-gun drumming”
John Fordham – London Jazz Festival Review, The Guardian
“Shocked and awed, the audience at London’s Vortex Jazz Club were thrilled by a blitzkrieg of expression from the LIMA Collective’s trioVD as they played their first headline London gig last night.
Drummer, Chris Bussey’s frenetic waves of rhythmic energy furiously pulsated through the sonic landscape, blanketing all sensory perception. Protruding through this musical fabric, guitarist, Chris Sharkey’s angular chordal shards of sound imbued Christophe de Bezenac’s muscular melodic expansions on alto saxophone with a stinging harmonic intensity.
Passages of free-form avant-rock, in which acute cymbal effects pierced subdued layers of electronic sound swarms, were brutally but seamlessly contradistinguished by tight be-bop/rock melodic themes propelled by commanding power-anthem rock grooves. The encore, built around an exultant theme glistening with pride, passion and a mercurial sensibility, served to reinforce what was already manifestly apparent: that this band has achieved a degree of cohesion, synergy, and abandon that few could emulate….”

‘It blew me away…Somewhere between Cinematic Orchestra and dubstep – just right!’ Gilles Peterson

Formed in Leeds in 2009, Submotion Orchestra have rapidly built up a reputation as one of the most interesting and original projects emerging from the UK today. Drawing upon dubstep, soul, ambient electronica, jazz and dub, their unique music is at once delicate and heavy, spacious and dense, highly atmospheric but firmly rooted. Earth-shaking bass and drums combine with lush keyboard and trumpet textures to create the perfect bed for the fragile beauty of the vocals, and the celestial effects of sound designer Ruckspin.

The band headlined at the Marsden Jazz Festival last year giving a sell-out performance that met with rave reviews for their unique take on jazz-fusion. Their gig in Hebden Bridge is likely to meet with similar success,  – especially since singer Ruby Wood has long been a favourite here.
